WEB GEMS- Top 10th: Elston Howard blocked the plate, saving a run!
The Cleveland Buckeyes nipped the Detroit Penguins in 10 innings 4 to 3 at
Mistake by the Lake in a hard fought contest.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Cleveland was victorious in the 10th
inning. Don Landrum smacked a single. Willie Mays stepped up to the plate
and he stroked a one-base hit. Elston Howard dug into the batters box next,
but he struck out. Dick Radatz then threw a wild pitch. Bill White came to
the plate and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Pete Ward kept the
rally going and drew a walk resulting in a mighty exciting win for Cleveland
and the 42,616 home town fans in attendance. Despite losing, Detroit out-hit
Cleveland 14 to 10.
The win was credited to Pedro Ramos(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
Ray Washburn(0-1) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and no walks
without retiring a batter.
