WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Ron Fairly robbed Wes Covington of an extra base hit.
Leo Cardenas had 4 hits at Raley Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Sacramento River Cats 4 to 2.
Pittsburgh brought 3 runs across the plate in the top of the 2nd inning with
the help of 5 hits. Charlie Lau led off and started the attack as he stroked
a single. Cardenas followed and he stroked a base-hit, and an error was also
committed. Matty Alou then slapped a single scoring two teammates. Alou
took second on the throw. After an out was recorded, Fred Newman stepped in
and he delivered a one-base hit. Wes Parker stepped into the box and banged
out a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. That early scoring held
up. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Newman(1-0) allowed 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Wilbur Wood got the save, his 1st. Jim Bunning(0-1) took the loss.
