Right fielder Frank Howard hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at Fenway Park where the Boston Beaneaters beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 13 innings by the score of 6 to 5.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Boston won the hard fought contest in the 13th inning. Jim Perry drew a walk. Tito Francona was next and he smacked a single. Tommy Helms then was hit by a pitch. Two outs later Danny Cater came to the plate and laced a one-base hit resulting in a mighty exciting win for Boston and the 35,825 home town fans in attendance. Boston banged out 15 on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Perry(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Jim Brewer(0-1) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings.
