Johnny Briggs rocketed 2 homeruns at Illini Reservation as the Springfield
Bulls beat the Columbus Redbirds 5 to 2.
Springfield took the lead off Phil Niekro in the first inning with 3 runs
using 4 hits. Amos Otis led off the inning for Springfield when he hit a
single. Ron Hunt next to the plate and he was hit by a pitch. After an out
was recorded, Joe Torre came to the plate and rifled a three-run blast. Ted
Simmons followed and he doubled. Briggs was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out. Al Kaline kept things alive and lined a single. That early run
support was enough for Mike Hedlund(1-0) and Springfield. Springfield had 8
hits for the night.
Hedlund was helped out by Bill Wilson who recorded his 1st save. Niekro(0-1)
absorbed the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 6 hits and no walks.
