The Portland Beavers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates at Tiger Stadium by the score of 4 to 3.
Portland jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 7th inning scoring one runner. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Ken Holtzman(1-0) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Holtzman was helped out by Paul Lindblad who recorded his 1st save. Jerry Bell(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.
