Third baseman Dan Driessen jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI and Jon Matlack didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Boston Beaneaters defeated the Portland Beavers 7 to 2 at Fenway Park.
Matlack(1-0) pitched a solid game. He went 7 and 1/3 innings and surrended up 5 hits and 2 walks. Matlack recorded 10 strikeouts. The left-handed Matlack had his no-hit bid broken up by Dave Concepcion who doubled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Boston managed 7 hits in their victory.
Luis Tiant(0-1) was charged with the loss. When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Matlack offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
