The San Francisco Golden Seals came roaring back in the top of the ninth to
spoil the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,,
was 5 to 4.
San Francisco had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3
runs on 3 base hits. Rick Auerbach kicked off the action when he laced a
one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Bill North followed and he
drew a walk. Mike Jorgensen then launched a three-run homer. Cliff Johnson
came up and he ripped a single. One out later, Bobby Grich stepped in and he
grounded into a double play. John Hiller(1-0) got help from Dale Murray who
pitched great and earned his 2nd save.
Bill Campbell(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. Pete DeStefano was
feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game,
'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in
silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the
stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'
