Gary Matthews slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI and Andy Messersmith completed
the game without help from the bullpen as the Texas Rangers smashed the
overmatched Minnesota Xpress, 22 to 2.
The Texas fans enjoyed the offense provided by Matthews. He ripped a solo
home run in the 4th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 4th
inning. Texas provided plenty of action in the 4th inning which saw them
plate 7 runs on 5 hits and the 8th inning which saw them score 5 runs on 5
hits. Texas finished with 22 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Messersmith(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Dan Warthen(0-2) was the loser. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk.
