In a game at Busch Stadium the Columbus Redbirds got by the Portland Beavers
by the score of 5 to 2.
Columbus scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The crucial at-bat
was provided by Ed Armbrister who excited the crowd when he tripled which was
good for two runs.  Portland was retired without difficulty in the 9th.
The win was credited to Steve Carlton(1-0) who went 7 innings allowing 2 runs.
Carlton got relief help from Mike Marshall who gained credit for his 2nd
save.  Jerry Koosman(0-1) took the loss.  He pitched 7 innings giving up 8
hits and no walks.
