Left fielder Tom Poquette had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Portland Beavers
defeated the Columbus Redbirds by the score of 5 to 3 at Busch Stadium.
Columbus never recovered after Portland took the lead in the 5th inning
scoring one runner on 2 hits. Jim Kern was great in relief and recorded his
1st save.  
Paul Lindblad(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing
no runs. The loss was charged to Mark Fidrych(1-1).  He allowed 9 hits and 4
walks in 6 innings.
