Dave Winfield collected 2 extra-base hits at Comiskey Park as the Chicago Fire beat the Albuquerque Dukes by the count of 1 to 0.
Albuquerque surrendered what proved to be the only run of the contest when Chicago scored in the bottom of the 6th inning. Albuquerque made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win went to Joe Niekro(1-0) who allowed no runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Niekro was helped out by Skip Lockwood who recorded his 1st save. Frank Tanana(1-1) was the losing pitcher.
John O'Donnell was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'
