Vida Blue reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the Montreal Expos staged a
dramatic comeback over the Alabama Vipers by a score of 4 to 3 at Viper Park.
Montreal had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs. Jerry Royster led off and got things going when he drew a walk.
Elliott Maddox stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice
bunt. One out later, Eric Soderholm then bombed a two-run dinger. Overall
Montreal out-hit Alabama 10 to 5.
The victory was credited to Vern Ruhle(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Ruhle got relief help from Enrique Romo who gained credit for his 4th
save. Doug Bair(0-1) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 1 hit
in 1 inning.
Gil Smith was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our
guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us tonight'
