The Columbus Redbirds and the Portland Beavers locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Busch Stadium. The final score was the Columbus Redbirds 8,
the Portland Beavers 7.
Portland was unable to claim the lead after Columbus went ahead in the bottom
of the 7th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged
to Rick Burleson who made the crowd come alive when he delivered a base-hit
bringing in two baserunners. Portland made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win was credited to Phil Niekro(1-0) who went 8 innings allowing 7 runs.
Tug McGraw recorded the save, his 1st. Aurelio Lopez(1-1) was the loser in
relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.
'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Keith Bessinger 'But we
have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'
