The Columbus Redbirds defeated the Portland Beavers by a score of 5 to 2 at Tiger Stadium.
Steve Nicosia was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st inning and doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond in the 5th inning. Despite losing, Portland out-hit Columbus 8 to 5.
Fergie Jenkins(1-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Tug McGraw gained credit for his 2nd save. Tommy John(0-2) was hit with the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.
