Bill Gullickson blanked Portland allowing just 3 hits and right fielder Dwight Evans blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Municipal Stadium where the Sacramento Red Sox beat the Portland Beavers by the score of 4 to 0.
It was a good day for Sacramento thanks to Evans. He cracked a two-run shot in the 1st inning, ripped a solo home run in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th inning. Sacramento rapped out 8 hits for the night.
Gullickson(1-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Danny Darwin(0-1) was the loser. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances tonight,' Keith Bessinger said. 'Gullickson just was too much for our guys.'
