TEAM RISP- Whitecaps: 2 for 11 Kings: 0 for 5
WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Willie McGee robbed Andre Thornton of an extra base hit.
The Whitecaps put up a run in the first and the second and held the 2-0 lead
until Al Oliver hit a home run for the Kings in the fourth to close the gap
to one. Jerry Reuss and Nolan Ryan were masterful as that score held going into
the bottom of the eighth.
Great Lakes was four outs away from the championship when Lee Lacy stepped to
the plate as a pinch hitter and blasted a home run to tie it up sending Kings
fans into a frenzy. Neither team could get a base runner in the ninth and the
game headed to extras.
In the bottom of the 10th, Carlton Fisk nearly had an inside the park home run
with one out. The Whitecaps walked Ben Ogilvie in hopes of getting a double play,
and it worked. On to the 11th where again Great Lakes couldn't get anything going.
The Kings sensed a chance and loaded the bases with no outs! Yet another double play
saved the Whitecaps and the game continued.
But in the bottom of the 13th, Jerry Hairston had enough, and hit a bomb over the
centerfield wall to give the Kings the win and extend the series. Kings pitching
held the Whitecaps scoreless for an impressive 11 straight innings.
