TV ratings were off the charts as Vin Scully called the game on NBC. He commented at the end that this was one of the most amazing series he's ever witnessed.
Greg Zahn and Vida Blue faced off for the second time in the series. And Zahn was ready for the moment as he didn't surrender a hit in the first five frames. Al Oliver and Jose Cruz hit back to back doubles in the fourth to get a run off of Blue, but he stayed steady and held the Kings to this lone run through six.
The Whitecaps offense was on its heals, but finally got things going in the sixth putting up four runs thanks to a Robin Yount bases loaded triple. They also added a run in the seventh and the 5-1 lead heading into the eighth with Lee Smith lurking had the fans feeling pretty confident.
But the Kings wanted the hardware in a bad way. With two outs and nobody on, they got a walk, single, walk, wild pitch, single and the score was 5-4 and edges of seats were being worn out. The Whitecaps couldn't generate an insurance run so it simply came down to Lee Smith vs the Kings for the championship. Smith got the first two outs. But Lee Lacy, an MVP candidate in the series, singled, and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. With the baseball world on its feet, Smith got Jim Gantner to fly out to deep left to give the Whitecaps the win and the championship.
