WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Buddy Bell robbed Lou Piniella of a base hit.
Lou Piniella hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Dave Stieb didn't allow a hit until
the 9th inning as the Chicago Fire outscored the Great Lakes Whitecaps 3 to 1.
Stieb pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Great Lakes batters. He gave up just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The
right-handed Stieb had his no-hit bid broken up by Mike Squires who singled
with one out in the 9th inning. Great Lakes made it exciting in the 9th, but
they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The losing pitcher was Jerry Reuss. He surrendered 3 runs and 9 hits in
7 and 2/3 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game,
Reuss was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were
going to be in for a long night. Stieb brought his 'A' game with him - he
had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one
or two bad pitches the entire game!
