WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Glenn Hoffman robbed Ron Washington of a base hit.
Ken Singleton had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Dimaggio Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates
pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the San Francisco Golden Seals by the
count of 13 to 11.
Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning when they scored
6 runs on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Singleton who deflated
the mood of the partisan fans when he rifled a three-run blast. Pittsburgh kept
the scorekeepers busy in the 9th inning which saw them score 6 runs on 5 hits.
Pittsburgh finished with 21 hits while San Francisco ended up with 9.
Jay Howell(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Howell
got help from Gary Lavelle who was credited with his 1st save. Ron Davis was
given the loss in relief.
Dean Amrhein was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last
at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'
