Mike Schmidt homered and had 3 RBI as the Erie Seawolves topped the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 4 to 1 at Angel Stadium.
Erie took the lead off Mike Moore in the first inning plating 2 runs. After two were out Kent Hrbek started the rally when he drew a walk. Schmidt stepped up to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. That early run support was all that Rick Sutcliffe(1-0) required. Rich Gossage was perfect in relief and got the save, his 2nd.
Moore ended up with the loss. He gave up 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3 innings.
