Write-up from Cleveland manager, Scott Katzenmeyer:
Cleveland opened the game with a walk, single, and 2-out RBI single from Alan Trammell. But that is all Tibbs would give up and after Dale Murphy's solo shot, Cleveland led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 8th.
Morris had cruised through 7 innings giving up only a 2-out single to Tim Raines in the 6th. But Morris started to look like he was tired after giving up a lead off homer to Buddy Bell in the 8th and a double to Ruben Sierra. After a sac bunt and Harold Reynolds coming on to pinch hit, Cleveland opted for the slick fielding lefty Dipino to come on to pitch. Ruben Sierra inexplicably attempted to steal home and was gunned down and Cleveland held on to the lead, 2-1.
Cleveland went down 1-2-3 in the 9th and with the matchups seeming to favor a lefty, Ed Olwine came in to try and shut down the game, but after a lead off single from Raines and a sacrifice bunt from Griffin, Raines got Olwine to balk him over to third. Boggs hit a grounder to Walker that had no shot at the plate and Great Lakes tied the score at 2. On to extra innings we go!
Both teams went down in order in the 10th. In the 11th, Great Lakes had Raines on 2nd with 2 down, and after a meeting on the mound, Dravecky convinced the manager he could get Boggs out despite hitting over .400 for the series and got him to ground out. Both bullpens were stellar as each team had only 6 hits through 16 innings!!! The game went to the 18th and after a 1-out walk to Dale Murphy, Greg Walker blasted a 2-run homer off Mike Lacoss to give Cleveland a 4-2 lead.
Scott Sanderson was starting his 4th inning of relief and retired the first 2 batters, but gave up a 2-out double to Mike LaCoss and a single to Tim Raines. With the only available pitchers being the Game 5 & 6 starters, after a mound visit, Sanderson induced Alfredo Griffin into a foul out and Cleveland survived the marathon Game 7 for a 4-3 series win!
Sanderson & Candeleria were amazing out of bullpen going 7 innings of scoreless ball. Smith, Orosco, Carman & Husimann the same for Great Lakes & Lacoss had already gone 2 scoreless before giving up the homer. An absolute classic way to end series.
By far the most even, challenging and fun series I have ever been a part of!!! Dave & I kept sharing OMG moments throughout the whole series. A shame one team had to lose.
Co-MVPs of the series go to Greg Walker for his Game 7 heroics and hitting .250 with 2 HR & 6 RBI for the series, and Sid Fernandez who went 2-0 without giving up a run. Notable others were Mike Pagliarulo with 3 dingers, Wade Boggs (.414, 6 RBI), and Scott Bradley (.500, 2 HR, 7 RBI).
For the series Cleveland was out-hit 66-48, but the 12 homers from Cleveland helped lead them to victory.
Series for the ages and kudos to Dave for an awesome team and best series I ever played.
