Center fielder Dion James collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the San Francisco Golden Seals rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Winter Haven Hamsters, 6 to 4.
San Francisco erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning plating 3 runs. Rob Deer led off and got things going when he drew a walk. Bob Brenly followed next and he drew a walk. Chris Speier then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Tim Teufel followed and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. James stepped into the box and doubled driving in two more baserunners. Randy Ready added his contribution to the rally and drew a walk to load the bases. Chet Lemon got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Jack Clark then drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. Although they lost, Winter Haven did out-hit San Francisco 10 to 7.
The win went to Scott Garrelts(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Garrelts got help from Dave Smith who was credited with his 3rd save. Randy Myers(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 1 hit and 5 walks.
Pete DeStefano was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.'
