WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Felix Mantilla robbed Vada Pinson of a base hit.
Chicago fans certainly got their money's worth at Wrigley Field. Sandy
Koufax(3-4) pitched a rare no-hitter as the Oakland Oaks toppled the Chicago
River Dogs 4 to 0 in 10 innings.
The run-column was full of goose eggs at the end of nine full innings.
Oakland was victorious in the 10th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Vada Pinson who quieted the crowd when he laced a single bringing in two
baserunners. Oakland had 9 hits for the night.
The losing pitcher was Harvey Haddix(3-3) in relief. It took a while to pry
Koufax way from his teammates as they all wanted to show their appreciation
and joy. Finally, however, Mike Grahn got to offer his own congratulations
with a big bear hug and the comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games
I have seen in all my years in baseball - Koufax was masterful out there tonight!'
