Mark Fidrych pitched 9 strong innings at Arlington Stadium where the Kansas City A's beat the Durham Bulls 1 to 0.
Kansas City took the lead off Jim Slaton in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. That was all Fidrych(1-0) needed. Durham made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Slaton(0-1) ended up with the loss. He gave up only 3 hits and no walks in 7 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Slaton was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Fidrych brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
