Dennis Leonard completed the game without help from the bullpen and Larry Bowa had 2 base hits and scored 3 times as the Homestead Grays topped the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 6 to 2 at Shea Stadium.
Memphis never recovered after Homestead took the lead in the 5th inning with 2 runs. Dave Lopes kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Mickey Mantle then called for a steal which was successful. Ken Griffey then hit a deep fly plating a run. Bowa followed and he stroked a single. Rusty Staub came to the plate and reached on an error. Eddie Murray kept the inning going and reached on an error. Ruppert Jones stepped up next and he would hit into a force play scoring the final run of the inning. Despite losing, Memphis out-hit Homestead 10 to 6.
