Center fielder Bake McBride had 2 base hits and Ron Guidry had a strong outing as the Homestead Grays beat the Reading Pretzles by a score of 4 to 0.
Reading was unable to recover after Homestead went ahead in the 3rd inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Guidry(1-0) and Homestead. That was all the run support Guidry required. Homestead had 10 hits for the night.
Bob Stanley(0-1) was the loser. 'Guidry gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Mickey Mantle said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
