In a dramatic ending, the Portland Beavers staged a comeback win over the Columbus Redbirds by the count of 6 to 5. Portland had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Mike Greenwell got things going when he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Rance Mulliniks came to the plate and banged out a single. Dickie Thon then stroked a base-hit plating a run. Greg Gagne stepped in and he worked the squeeze play to perfection resulting in an exciting win for Portland and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Columbus out-hit Portland 11 to 6, but Portland ended up with more runs. Cecilio Guante(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Mike Morgan(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. Guante and Gagne were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Keith Bessinger noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
