1975 All-Star Game at Comiskey Park
5 2
This game started out looking like it was going
to be a slugfest... the NL jumped out for a run against Seaver in the 1st
and the AL came right back with two of their own on a clout by Nettles.
Lolich and Blyleven changed the tone of the game by matching zeroes over the
next couple of innings.
Rudy May entered the game in the 5th and quickly
got the first two NL batters out... but following hits by Singleton and Bowa,
the NL had a chance to recapture the lead. Rose came in to pinch hit for Orta
and AL manager (Jeff Smith) thought seriously about walking the clutch hitting
Rose to pitch to Bonds. Instead, Jeff gave the go-ahead to May to challenge
Rose... Charlie Hustle promptly lined a double into the leftfield corner to
score two... rumor has it that Rose had a side bet with his coach that he'd
come through with a hit :) Bonds and Montanez followed with 2-out singles to
score two more to cap the 4-run inning for the NL.
Both leagues showed off their bullpens by shutting
down the potentially explosive bats the rest of the way. In fact, the only hit
after the 5th inning was a single by Montanez in the 8th.
One final note: This game may have gone to extra
innings if the AL got a bit luckier on the splits... 3 potential homers fell
just short of going over the wall... 2 of the 3 were caught for outs.
